Supreme Court Takes Suo Motu Action on Defunct CCTV Cameras in Police Stations

The Supreme Court on Thursday (September 4) registered a suo motu case. There is a lack of functional CCTV cameras in police stations across the country.

A Bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta initiated the proceedings. They took note of a report published by Dainik Bhaskar. The report revealed that at least 11 people have died in police custody in the last seven to eight months of this year.

This development comes nearly four years after the Court’s landmark judgment in Paramvir Singh Saini v. Baljit Singh (December 2020), which directed all State and Union Territory governments to ensure that CCTV cameras are installed in every functioning police station. The ruling also required that such cameras be kept operational at all times.

However, compliance with the directive has remained incomplete and inconsistent, with several police stations either failing to install cameras or having non-functional systems.

By taking up the matter suo motu, the apex court has once again underlined the urgency of ensuring transparency and accountability in police functioning, especially in the wake of custodial deaths.
