Calcutta High Court Informed: South Kolkata Law College Rape Survivor Satisfied with Police Probe

Calcutta rape case

Kolkata, July 11, 2025 — The Calcutta High Court received information on Thursday. They were told that the rape survivor in the South Kolkata Law College case is currently satisfied with the investigation progress made by the Kolkata Police.

The statement was made by the victim’s Advocate-on-Record (AOR) before a Division Bench comprising Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Smita Das De, during the hearing of multiple public interest litigations (PILs) seeking a court-monitored, independent probe into the incident.

“Victim’s Advocate-on-Record (AOR) has said that the victim is satisfied with the progress of the investigation so far,” the Court recorded in its order.

The case involves the alleged rape of a first-year student on June 25 in the security guard room of South Calcutta Law College. A medical examination conducted at a state-run hospital corroborated the victim’s account.

Four individuals have been arrested so far: Manojit Mishra, Promit Mukherjee, Zaid Ahmed, and the college’s security guard. It is alleged that Mishra committed the rape, while the others recorded videos to blackmail the survivor. Mishra is reportedly associated with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) youth wing.

During the hearing, the Court examined the sealed cover report and the case diary submitted by the police. It directed that a scanned copy of the progress report be provided to the victim’s lawyer, with safeguards on confidentiality.

“A scanned copy of this report to be prepared by the department in the presence of the officer of this court shall be handed over to the AOR for the victim, in the presence of the AOR of the state,” the Bench ordered.

The Calcutta Court warned the victim’s counsel not to disclose the contents of the sealed report and further instructed the police to submit another progress report within four weeks.

In a related development, the Court dismissed a PIL filed by Vijay Kumar Singhal seeking a CBI probe, citing doubtful intentions. The Bench noted that the petitioner, instead of focusing on the alleged lapses in the investigation, appeared to advocate for the human rights of the accused.

“We have a serious doubt about their bona fide… the petitioner is now espousing the cause of the accused being ill-treated,” the Court remarked while dismissing the plea.
