In a key judicial appointment, the Central Government has officially notified the elevation of Justice A. Muhamed Mustaque as the Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court. The appointment follows the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, in its December 18, 2025 meeting.
Who Is Justice A. Muhamed Mustaque?
Justice Mustaque, born on June 1, 1967 in Thana, Kannur (Kerala), has a well-rounded legal background:
- Law degree from Vaikunta Baliga College of Law, Udupi and an LL.M in Labour Law from Mahatma Gandhi University.
- Additional advanced studies in space and telecommunication law, private international law, and e-commerce and intellectual property from institutions including Paris XI University, The Hague Academy, and WIPO.
Justice Mustaque enrolled as an advocate in 1989 and served in diverse legal fields — civil, commercial, constitutional, administrative, service, and criminal law — before various courts and tribunals.
He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Kerala High Court in January 2014, became a Permanent Judge in March 2016, and also held the post of Acting Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court in 2024.

Appointment and Assumption of Office
The Centre’s notification — issued on January 3, 2026 — authorizes Justice Mustaque’s appointment as Chief Justice effective from the date he assumes charge. He took the oath of office on January 4, 2026, administered at a ceremony in Gangtok, formalizing his role at the Sikkim High Court.
Justice Mustaque’s elevation restores the Sikkim High Court’s sanctioned strength to three judges, enhancing its capacity to manage its judicial docket efficiently.
